After 2 years of work on Coaster Thrills is finished!

Coaster Thrills is the culmination of several years of hard work on an idea to build an app this is fun, easy to play, and re-playable.  It took a lot of work, and there were several very hard problems with Corona SDK that had to be overcome.   Some of those issues are documented here and here.  I had a great team that helped test and give feedback throughout the process that really helped shape this app.  Couldn't have done it without them.

Some of my favorite highlights from the app are:

  • Menu design.  Seriously I spent forever making the menu system work fluidly and correctly.  I went through several iterations and designs and I'm very happy with where it went.
  • Sound design.  I'm not the strongest at music and sounds but this turned out great.  There were some hidden features in Corona SDK that allowed for cool things like the track sound that can be sped up or down depending on the train speed.  Also all the music credits go to Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com.  Kevin does amazing work and gives his music away royalty and license free to developers who want to use them.  All the music in the app came from his great work!
  • Level design.  I would be lying if I said it wasn't hard making 36 unique levels.  But it was actually a lot of fun making fun, interesting, and sometimes tricky tracks for users to play.  There are a couple track designs that turned out really good and require a bit of patience to figure out how to beat them.

Seriously I loved making this app, even if it took forever.  It presented fun challenges and required a bit of work to bring everything together.  I hope you have as much fun playing it as I had making it!

Video of the gameplay. I love how the game came out, it's fun to play! Even after having spent 2 years building it I enjoy playing it as well. I spent a lot of time making the menus flow and get the player quickly to where they want to go. One of the first levels in the game, I tried to make the first pack very easy and to train the user to some of the track elements they'll be seeing throughout. A level from the desert pack, still considered an easier level. A loop approaches. Loops were a cool element to realize I could easily fit into the level structure I had build. Such a nice shaped loop. Ron Toomer would be proud! I love the ability to fly through the air, sometimes you can get lucky and get in right in the station. Usually you just crash.
